Taurine WWW sites

Bullfighting at its Finest
(US)
Lo mejor de los toros
(ES)

maintained by Gerald Campos (homepage -- available in both English and in Spanish). Maybe the best collection of bullfighting photos on the web. Most photos were taken (or screen captured) by the webmaster, Gerald Campos or by Gary Sloan, and are categorized according to traditional corrida stages (1st tercio; 2d tercio; 3d tercio; the kill) plus sections for photos of gorings and photo-bios of featured matadors. Emphasis is on the toreros and corridas of the Mexican-US frontera -- carried over into very good coverage of frontera schedules, ticket prices, a local escalafon, etc. It doesn't end there though ... there's plenty here to justify regular visits.
Bullfighting in Mexico!
(US +\- frames)
¡Toros en México! (ES +/- frames)
maintained by David Gutiérrez Ruiz (a student at UNAM, working on this thesis in the Institute of Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems (and hoping to begin graduate studies in bioengineering soon), whose homepage is available in Spanish and English). The site's name says it all -- a carefully maintained showcase for bullfighting with a focus on present day México (emphasizing the centrality of Plaza México -- both in México and in the mundo taurino -- one of the two most important plazas in the world).
[Iyo] Bullfighting
in
Uwajima, Japan
(US)
maintained by Kenji Nitta -- no, not traditional Iberian bullfighting, but something the site's webmaster characterizes as more akin to Sumo, bull against bull -- a local traditional event for hundreds of years.

The
Bullfighting
Page

(US)

maintained by Jorgen Vervliet The first Belgian bullfighting page on the web.

Capeia Raiana
(PT)

maintained by Francisco Fernandes A Portuguese site intended to further the taurine traditions -- including the Capeia Raiana -- of Aldeia Velha (a town on the Portuguese-Spanish frontera, in the Guarda District, near Sabugal).
Club Taurino
de
Pamplona

(ES)
maintained by the club -- a mini-treasure for Pamplonistas. Site includes information about the club's activities; poetry (an homage to the first Estadounidense killed during the encierros); contact addresses (snail-mail and phone only); and a brief history of "El Cφrculo Taurino BayonΘs," among other things. Site is labled "A±o XVIII - N║ 17" so it appears the contents are not going to be updated too frequently.
Corrida de
Toros
(ES)
Maintained by Todo sobre Espa±a -- a site dedicated to promoting tourism in Spain. The taurine portion of this site is one of the few TRUELY poly-lingual bullfighting sites, available also in English, and in German versions. Also a good place to see some innovative taurine animations -- come get a glimpse of the direction on-line site design is taking.
Conde
de la Maza
(ES)
maintained by Cortijo de Arenales, the ganaderia's parent organization -- site is intended to foster tourist interest in the operations of the Cortijo -- including tours of the ganaderia, the horse-breeding activities, etc. The Cortijo intends to increase the amount of on-line materials about the ganaderia in the future.
España al desnudo
(Spain Uncovered)
(US)
maintained by Javier Gayán A large catalog of web-based information of interest to any hispanophile (including Spanish government sites; Spanish universities, newspapers and periodicals; sports; internet providers; tourism; banks and economic sites; and -- certainly not last for our purposes -- a section focused on taurine sites), all maintained by a Spanish graduate student studying "behavioral genetics" in Colorado.
La Fiesta Brava
(ES)
maintained by Ana Jacqueline García Rodríguez The webmaster here (who holds a degree in Communications Science from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey), has produced this basic site with elementary background information on the fiesta, its history and participants.
La Fiesta Brava
Temporada Grande '96-'97

(ES)
maintained by the Mexican television network, Televisa -- including information about the "high season" in Plaza México; short biographies (illustrated) of Mexican and non-Mexican toreros; and illustrations of the brands from many Mexican ganaderias.
Le Forum Toro
(FR)
maintained by Paul-André Pays Although created and maintained by Mr. Pays, this site is truly a "forum," a place to spout off about anything taurine -- you can initiate new topics or respond to others' posts -- so it's content is primarily determined by the people who read and post to it.
Melpi
(ES)
maintained by this Spanish organization involved with the breeders of fighting bulls and Andalusian horses -- site contains information about taurine and equine ganaderias (illustring their brands and a bit of historical data), photos of horses, bulls, and toreros ... and plans for much more material.
Mundo Taurino [Internet]
(US)
maintained by Stanley Conrad An attempt to facilitate bullfight aficionados' access to taurine information by cataloging everything that can be found on the internet -- by providing home pages to taurine organizations that do not have their own sites -- and by providing contact/access information for traditional forms of information (e.g., magazines, television broadcasts, films, etc.) -- by maintaining an international mailing-list for the dissemination of taurine news.
Paco
Cespedes
(ES)
maintained by Ramos Cespedes This site, "subtitled" Trayectoria de un Torero Peruano, is more than simply an homage to the retired Peruvian matador, Paco Cespedes. You can also find here links to more information about the fiesta en Peru than in most other web sites.
Rough Guide
to
Bullfighting

(US +)
maintained by Andalucia.com, a large site designed to promote tourism and business in Andalucia. The taurine pages contain basic background information, and some unique items -- like photos of several matadoras (yes, Cristina Sßnchez is not the only one).
La Tauromaquia: The Art of Bullfighting
(US +)
maintained by Mario Carrión -- A very good collection of taurine resources and links some in Spanish, some in English. The webmaster here is a retired matador whose taurine writing appears (in Spanish) with some regularity in the magazine, Coloquio (edited by Javier Bustamante, who is also the webmaster of the Hispanic Pages in the USA, the "mother site" that plays host to La Tauromaquia).
Torero, Torero!!!
(ES)
maintained by Rosa Jaramillo -- Focus of this site is on the fiesta in México, with special emphasis on the northern frontera (the webmaster lives in Tijuana). Good coverage is provided on the local temporada -- lots of basic, introductory information about the stages of the bullfight -- and some unique features, like the responses of various matadors to a questionnarie sent them by Ms. Jaramillo.
la asociación
EL TORO
de Madrid

(ES)
maintained by this Spanish taurine organization -- a marvelous site, very professionally designed, brimming with taurine information -- worth frequent visits. If you don't read Spanish you'll have trouble here, but what better motivation to learn!
Los Toros
maintained by Alfonso Landaluce in Madrid. An ambitious site that's chock full of interesting information, much of which is not repeated in the other taurine sites.
¡Toros en Holanda!
(DL +)
maintained by Marco Legemaate The webmaster here, a Dutch anthropologist, has the distinction of having created one of the first internet taurine web sites. Materials are posted in Dutch (mostly), Spanish and English (not all materials available in all languages).
le Web Toro
(FR)
site had been maintained by the newspaper, Libération at the following URL: http://www.liberation.com/toro/index.html. As Libération (or, Libé, as its friends call it) had indicated, it did NOT intend to maintain the site (because, according to them, "The operations have been canceled for copyrights reasons."). It appears their taurine pages have now been removed from the WWW.
WSPA-HSI
Anti-Bullfighting
Campaign
(US)
maintained by the World Society for the Protection of Animals to publicize their "no mas viOLEncia" campaign -- in their own words, "a comprehensive campaign utilizing consumer boycotts to economically cripple this bloodsport" ... "a massive public education plan to combat th[e] rise of bullfighting" "Until their blood red flag is replaced by a white flag of peace, bullfighters will continue to face the vehement opposition of WSPA and HSI" -- anyone who cares about the future of the fiesta brava must remain informed about these organizations' activities.
ZIA Bullfighting Resources
(US)
maintained by ZIA Resources (a "safe place" from which families and educators can search the web) -- a brief catalog worth an occasional visit)
